Jannari

The so-called ‘insect men’ of Xioquen are a bit of an oddball as they seemingly share no common root with other sentient races. For one thing, they are complete invertebrates whereas all other sentient races on Xioquen are vertebrate or vertebrates with an added (often vestigial) exoskeleton. Secondly, they have a larval stage which is something no other sentient race on Xioquen has. They are seemingly thus physically closer to the large bugs which populate the world. The strangest thing about Jannari, however is….that they are seemingly rather normal people, misplaced enthusiasm aside.

Appearance

Jannari appearance can be a bit jarring and confusing to human-like races. These creatures are large, bipedal insects averaging around 6’0" and 6’2" with rather identical builds. They resemble no specific breed of insect. Their bodies are covered in an exoskeleton of varying color, usually a shade of brown with a few yellow-ish and green-ish individuals. This, of course, is not counting their markings which are vivid and highly colorful. A Jannari’s face is quite terrifying but oddly expressive, with mandibles capable of a wide range of motion. Jagged spurs, akin to teeth, adorn their mouths. Their eyes are multifaceted and small, vestigial antenna adorn the brow of their strangely human-like head. Jannari have a bipedal, humanoid posture with the two upper pair of limbs fused in a single pair of arms ending in dextrous hands. They lack wings.

Biology

Jannari are insects, albeit rather large and sapient ones. Their lifecycle is similar to that of other insects, namely they lay eggs and their young are born as larvae. Around the first decade of their life, young Jannari will undergo its first metamorphosis and pupate, becoming a sub-adult: it’s exoskeleton remain much softer and weaker. It is during this stage of life that Jannari develop proper sentience and are educated as children are as before that they are nothing but dumb squishy larvae. The next decade is followed by several molt as the Jannari grows to adulthood. As a Jannari grows and goes through it’s molting stages it become less and less insect-like.

Jannari lifespan is around fifty year for healthy individuals. While they don’t feel the weight of aging as humans do, remaining quite fit and energetic as they grow older, once their twilight years hit they tend to hit hard. As generally rapid breeders, Jannari are known for regularly splitting into small groups and traveling far away, bringing with them stories of their homeland. When that fail to keep population under control there’s always abstinence. As they tend to travel far away, many Jannari nomads fall prey to banditry and the depredation of monsters. There is an entire Jannari ‘sub culture’ dedicated to wandering into the Uncreated Night to seek out new worlds. Few, if any ever come back.

Culture & Religion

These two concepts are heavily intertwined with Jannari and more so than any other race. Jannari religion is more considered of a general ‘philosophy’ than a religion yet it is one which has omnipresent ramification in their culture. As insects, the Jannari are very social and this is reflected in their philosophy and religion: culture, family and civilization are at the key of their creed. This result in the average Jannari being passionately extroverted and friendly. Jannari love music, art and trade as well as discovering and sharing said cultures. Where others hoard knowledge, the Jannari exchange freely with others sometimes to the point of annoyance. They are excellent trader, builders and troubadour but their high-energy lifestyle can be exhausting and irritating to the more introverted. That and they never, ever shut the fuck up.

As civilization, its growth and preservation has such an importance to these creatures it is almost considered a mortal sin to despoil and destroy cultural and religious artifacts. Likewise, no Jannari would ever allow itself to be seen barely or completely unclothed. Not only are clothes useful for masking their odd anatomy and putting humanoids races at ease but it is also a key trapping of civilization. Long flowing robes and large hats are common to them. Jannari also adorn their bodies with bright, permanent markings which have various and sometimes confusing or contradictory meanings: a side-effect of how widely the race has traveled and assimilated aspects of other cultures and mythologies into their own.

While the Jannari are technically nomadic, only a part of their population truly is. Over the last centuries there have been populations of Jannari in larger cities. Usually they are tolerated because they bring business and riches from faraway lands. Excellent, if alien builders, many Jannari traveling families have been hired to build fortifications only to later settle in the places they helped build all because they had grown attached.

Despite a reputation as traders, troubadour, philosopher, musicians and general public annoyance the Jannari can be quite formidable fighters if only because their insectoid biology has granted them one useful boon in the form of their hardened exoskeleton. Not to mention that, being social creatures, they are quite capable of forming large armies in times of need.
